Now....about being on the road and having to sing for a special occasion - based on my experiences on road tours:
1. Take care of the voice - without it, what is the point of travelling to your gig or event?
2. Get enough nutrition - travel is so prone to junk food and unhealthy eating. Remember no matter where you are there is always a market or grocer where you can get more wholesome food. Don't forget the simpler, the better. Fruit, good organic slushes or juices are always available with a sandwich made from good bread with a little bit of deli lean meat or chicken and some delicious cut up veggies instead of fries.
3. Rest - I cannot stress this enough. With enough rest your voice will thank you. If you can't rest for a good 8 hours at least get your sleep in increments, but make sure you get your ZZZZZs.
4. Troubleshooting:
***SORE THROAT and you have to sing? Gargle with a little salt in warm water if in a bind and you can't find salt, always have a stash of aspirin to crumble in warm water for an emergency gargle. Ginger Tea is a good gargle too if available. Actually the real ginger root is the best. In my country the Philippines, singers use root Ginger as lozenge and we bite into the ginger every now and then to get some potent juice every now and then. Just refrain from kissing someone, unless they love the ginger scent. LOL. Stay away from any cold drink during your singing session. Anything cold at this point will kill your voice.
***COLDS and you still have to sing? If you must, you can buy an antihistamine that doesn't get you sleepy. However, only take the antihistamine just before your gig starts, to avoid your throat getting dry from the reaction to the drug. If this gig will last longer than anticipated then a Vicks Inhaler will help you in the meantime to stop the sneezing. Bring some honey with you to help your throat. Bringing a thermos of warm salt water will also help for in between gargles. You must keep your body warm at all times and stay away from temperature changes. Awareness is your best ally.
***LARYNGITIS could happen during an important event. It happened to me twice in my life and both times were not pleasant. The EENT doctor had to inject cortisone directly into my vocal chords so I could do my concert. It was a strange feeling to have that needle inside my throat, but it worked wonderfully and I was able to do an hours work with no problem.
To avoid this malady is the best medicine. I was stupid during that time and exposed myself to extreme weather changes. We were in Singapore during a hot time of the year and I played tennis, went inside to get a cold drink, came out again drenched in sweat then went swimming after. When I came back into the airconditioned hotel I felt my body shiver...instantly I knew that I had done myself a bad deed. That was the 2nd and last time it ever happened.
Note: People around me used to complain that hey never see me before my shows. I am very protective of my voice and I avoid all circumstances that could ruin my vocal cords. After my shows, I am again very sociable. Do not be tempted to socialise when you're not feeling well and you have to sing. Just tell everyone you will see them after the event.
