Consider the body of an acoustic Bass or the acoustic Guitar for example. When we pluck the strings, we hear a much louder sound as it resonates with the air inside the hollow body of the instruments. It's just the same as when we speak. The sound we make is from the air that vibrates our vocal cords and the sound resonates fully in the chambers of our nasal cavities, our throat, mouth and lung.
When you want to hit the high notes, just remember that the process involves moving the scale out of our Chest register into the Head register where equally the sound resonates in the nasal cavities which includes even the upper forehead. When we create the sound away from the Chest cavity on to the Head cavity, it will feel strange because you are using what is called a "falsetto" a term that explains itself, right? We used to sound like that when we were kids, you know, thin sounding and lacking depth and volume. However, strange sounding as it may seem to your ears, the more you sing in falsetto the more you learn how to control your breathing from your diaphragm. This is the moment when you know you are on your way to developing a stronger voice.
Maybe you could already be singing in falsetto when you need it, and you may not know you already have developed the knack. It depends on how often you are singing and what sort of songs you are singing.
The late Jeff Buckley influenced a whole new generation of male vocalists in the 70's. He was instrumental in developing the male vocalist's head voice in contemporary music, for example the BeeGees and many popular pop icons of that era. You will find that with practise, you will be able to add at least another full octave to a your voice in the top range.
To conclued, hitting the high notes is about discovering a new part of your voice that’s just waiting to be developed, and you may already have developed it. Oh joy!
My father the great Mahnee Cabase, teacher of many professional vocalists in Asia had only three words of advise to would be singers or advanced vocalists who are constantly improving and the three words are: Repetition, Repetition and Repetition.
Practise, Practise, Practise!
